Discipline Systems for Traders: Rules, Routines, and If-Then Plans
Discipline Systems for Traders: Rules, Routines, and If-Then Plans
Discipline is a system, not a mood. Build routines, constraints, and if-then rules that keep execution consistent.
Discipline fails when it depends on motivation. It scales when rules are pre-committed and simple to execute.
Build a three-part routine
- Pre-session: define key levels, risk limits, and setup criteria.
- In-session: take only A+ setups and follow size/stop rules.
- Post-session: journal, score execution, and define one improvement.
If-then plans to remove negotiation
- If I miss an entry, then I do not chase.
- If I take a loss, then I run cooldown protocol.
- If I feel urgency, then I run a two-minute checklist.
- If I break a rule, then I stop and journal immediately.
Guardrails that prevent blow-ups
- Max trades per day
- Daily loss limit
- Max open risk
- No adding to losing trades
- No leverage increase during a live session
